1722 - Henry Vagg and his son Thomas want to be settled in Roade from Leigh on Mendip.

    To the Church Wardens and overseers of the
    Poore of the parish of Roade in the county of
    Somersett.

    Whereas Henry Vagg and Thomas his son of our Parish
    of Lye Upon Mendiep in the County aforsaid Clothworker is
    desirous to inhabite and reside in the Parish of Roade abovesaid
    With therefor whose hands and seals are thereunto subscribed and
    sett being the major part of the Church Wardens and overseers of the
    Poore of the said Parish of Lye upon Mendiep Doe hereby
    testifye once? and acknowledge the said Henry Vagg and Thomas his
    son tobe an Inhabitant and Parishioner Legally settled within our said
    parish of Lye upon Mendeip In witness whereof we have hereby
    sett our hands and seales this twenty eight day of March in the
    ninth year of the Reigne of our Soveriegn Lord George by the grace
    of God King of Great Britain Defender of the Faith Anno Died 1722.

1764 - Nathanial Vagg and Family Removal Order from Shepton Mallet.

    Removal of Nathaniel Vagg and his wife, John Vagg his son aged 11 years and Nathaniel Vagg his son aged 8 years. ...examination of Ann Vagg...were last legally settled in Leigh on Mendip, Somerset.

1790 - Nathaniel Vagg his wife Martha and children John, Edward and Nathaniel try to gain settlement in Shepton Mallet.

    Somerset ???} The Examination of Nathaniel Vagg npw residing
    within the parish of Shepton Mallet within said
    county of Labourer taken before us two of his
    Majesties Justices of the Peace for the said county
    the 28th Day of January 1790.

    Who upon his oath saith that he was born in the parish
    of Shepton Mallet in the County as he has heard and believed that
    he lived with his parents in Shepton Mallet aforesaid ?? he was
    about eight years old when his father Nathaniel Vagg absconded
    for debt at which time his said Father was last legally settled in
    the parish of Leigh upon Mendip in the said County which he obtained
    by serving an apprenticeship to the trade of Blacksmith in the
    parish as he the examinant has heard and which he believes to
    be true and further that he this Examinant has heard that his
    said father has acquired a subsistance from that time by
    working as a Journeyman as the said Trade ever since he left
    Shepton Mallet aforesaid and doesnt know or believe his said
    father has done any act whatsoever whereby to gain
    a settlement since such his Apprenticeship as aforesaid That when his
    father left him this Examinant in Shepton Mallet aforesaifd
    he was noticed by John Vagg his Grandfather then of Mells
    Farrier who maintained him about II months when he this
    Examinant was taken in by his Uncle Edward Vagg then of
    Ashwick in the said County Yeoman as a friendless child and lived
    with him in Ashwick aforesaid ??? of ten years and some time
    before he left his said Uncle Edward Vagg he hired himself
    to him for a year and placed him under that hiring about
    ?? Months but ?? ??? to the best of his recollection and
    belief and has done no other act to gain settlement.

    and Nathaniel aged about Two years.

1845 - Examination of Nathaniel Vagg.

    The Examination of Nathaniel Vagg now residing in and chargeable to the Parish of Shepton Mallet in the County of Somerset Labourer touching the place of legal settlement taken on oath before us two of her Majesty's Justices of the peace in and for the said County this twenty eigth day of February 1845.

    Who on his Oath saith as follows -
    I am now about fifty nine years of age and am the lawful son of the late Nathaniel Vagg of the parish of Shepton Mallet in the said county Labourer and Martha his wife, and when I was about fifteen years of age I was bound by a regular Indenture of Apprenticeship which was prepared by Mr Higgins and attorney then residing in Shepton Mallet to Richard Burge of Stoke Lane otherwise Stoke Saint Michael in the county of Somerset Stocking Maker as an indoor apprentice for seven years and I duly served the said Richard Burge under this indenture in the said parish of Stoke Lane otherwise Stoke Saint Michael for about five years and for the said five years and whilst I so served the said Richard Burge I resided and slept at the house of my uncle John Bryant at Oakhill in the parish of Shepton Mallet aforesaid and the said Richard Burge paid for my board and lodging. I then enlisted into the Royal Marines and after serving as a soldier for ten years or thereabouts I returned to the parish of Stoke Lane otherwise Stoke Saint Michael int the year 1815. Soon after my return my said master The said Richard Burge gave me up my Indenture of Apprenticeship but I have now lost it and cannot find it. In the year 1816 I married in the Parish Church of Stoke Lane otherwise Stoke Saint Michael Sarah my present Wife by whom I have three lawful children and I and my said wife are now residing in and chargeable to the parish of Shepton Mallet aforesaid, After enlisting into the Army I never did any act to gain settlement on my own account.
